Minister Barbara Creecy notes the judgment in favour of NGOs on air quality challenges in Mpumalanga Highveld Area

Minister for Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Barbara Creecy notes the judgment by the Gauteng Division of the High Court that declared that the poor air quality in the Highveld priority area is a breach of residents’ Constitutional Right to an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being.

The department is studying the implications of the judgment, will obtain legal advice on the judgment and will comment on these matters in more detail in due course.

The application had been lodged by Groundwork and Vukani Environment represented by the Centre for Environmental Rights.
