The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment receives report on the scientific basis for breaching the mouth of Lake St Lucia Estuary, iSimangaliso Wetland Park

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Barbara Creecy, has received the report from the panel of experts, which reviewed the scientific basis for breaching the mouth of the Lake St Lucia Estuary in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in January 2022.
The minister appointed an independent, multidisciplinary Panel of Experts following an open letter from a scientist who had raised concerns about the breaching of the mouth of the estuary.
The minister is studying the findings and recommendations contained in the report, and will make the report and its recommendations public in the near future.
Working with sister government departments, including Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform, Water and Sanitation, as well district, local municipalities, and other stakeholders, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is committed to offering solutions that will safeguard the heritage in iSimangaliso, while also supporting the livelihoods of the communities in and around Park.
