Deputy Minister Thomson launches Gugulethu Environmental Awareness and Sustainability Initiative

12 March 2019

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs Ms. Barbara Thomson, will launch the Gugulethu Environmental Awareness and Sustainable Initiative, on 15 March 2019, at the Gugulethu NY2 Indoor Sports Grounds, Cape Town. The event will be preceded by a two-day exhibition on the 13th  and 14th of  March 2019, which will focus on the job and entrepreneurial opportunities created through DEA’s EPWP programmes as well environmental careers and bursary opportunities offered by DEA.

The main purpose of the event is to launch the Gugulethu Environmental Awareness and Sustainability Initiative and to support the Cleaning Campaign in Gugulethu township and its surrounding areas. This is in line with the ideals of the “Good Green Deeds” campaign, which was launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa, last week. The aim of the campaign is to also promote and encourage a clean, green and healthy environment in communities.

In addition to the launch, unemployed youth identified in various wards within Gugulethu Township will be provided with job opportunities in the Department’s EPWP, Working for the Coast programme.
