The Department of Environmental Affairs is responsible for the protection and management of South Africa’s natural resources in a manner that fosters sustainability and creates a healthy living environment for all the citizens of the country.
To this end, the department adheres to and promotes strong environmental governance in order to address the environmental and development challenges that confront our communities.

About GEF
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is the largest independent financial organization in the environment sector that provides assistance or grants to both government and non-government entities for the implementation of projects related to biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, and persistent organic pollutants.
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was formed in 1992 as a result of a global commitment by countries to cooperatively find solutions to limit global average temperature increased. There are now 195 Parties to the UNFCCC Convention.
Bilateral
Environmental cooperation programme between South Africa and Germany
South Africa and Germany have a long standing cooperation in the area of environment. Through environmental cooperation agreement signed in 1998 by two countries, German support has been instrumental in promoting development.

The environmental cooperation programme between South Africa and Norway started in 1997. This cooperation is based on mutual commitment by both nations to enhance development through international environmental conventions.
