Deputy Minister Makhotso Sotyu to handover the rehabilitated and greened Freedom Park Square in Zweletemba, Worcester.

14 November 2019

The Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF), Ms Makhotso Sotyu, will, on Friday, 15 November 2019, handover the rehabilitated and greened Freedom Park Square, a heritage site in Zweletemba, Worcester, in the Western Cape.

The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries has greened the square with landscaping and planting of indigenous plants, installed park furniture, as well as playing equipment for children. In addition to the greening of the square, the initiative is meant to address illegal dumping and neglected open spaces in communities. The heritage site, in honour of the Zweletemba fallen freedom fighters, is currently without a fence and this has resulted in the site being used for illegal dumping of waste, making it unattractive and unsafe to the local community and visitors.
